“Ohhhh, darn my luck, I pulled a muscle!” says Dipper unconvincingly. He looks at Jugsley, who squints at him. “We should probably go this other way….It looks a little easier to walk.”

Jugsley gets a vacant look in his eyes and then cackles.

Dipper, Mabel, and Blendin back away, trembling.

“It’s funny you should say that!” says Jugsley. “I was trying real hard to lead you one way so’s I could kill ya and steal your stuff. But I just realized, it doesn’t matter which way you go. I’m still gonna kill ya!” He lets out a devious laugh and pulls a rusty pickax from the wall.

The friends look at each other, and then they make a run for it.

Jugsley races after them.

They dash down the path without looking back.

“Where are we going?” shouts Mabel.

“I don’t know!” shouts Dipper. “Away from him!”

They round a corner into what looks like a dead end. Behind them, they hear the echo of the pickax scraping along the granite floors.

“End of the line, little nuggets,” says Jugsley.

To the left of the group is an abandoned mine cart on tracks leading down a dark tunnel. To their right is a pile of dynamite connected to a detonator.

“Guys, we have two choices,” says Dipper. “Either we escape by taking a dangerous mine-cart ride into the dark abyss or blow up the tunnel behind us and risk trapping ourselves.”

“Isn’t there a third option? Like diplomacy?” asks Mabel.

“No!” says the prospector, rounding the bend and starting to close the distance between them.

“Sorry, guys, we gotta pick our poison,” says Dipper.

Mabel bites her lip. “Dipper, what do we do?”
