Oddities in Cartoon Network France’s opening for Hilda.
Today CN France shared on their social networks 12 a little videos showcasing the intro of their newly aired series. People were a little bit surprised by the odd playback speed.
Let’s try to understand why it may have happened. First thing first: did it happen to the other videos? (Every video has been downloaded with the latest yt-dlp)
Video | Length | IG Framerate | Twitter Framerate | YT Framerate |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 0:16 | 30 | 25 | n.a. |
2 | 0:30 | 30 | 25 | n.a. |
3 | 0:30 | n.a | n.a | 25 |
4 | 0:26 | 30 | 29,970 | n.a. |
Ok, what the h. is happening here? Is their video editing suite switching framerate depending on the target? But then the 29,970 on the #4 doesn’t make sense. Is Instagram switching framerate for some reason? Trying with some 24fps uploads on Instragram it seems like they do some 24->30 fps switching. oooook…..
We can ignore the Instagram column then.
Video | Length | Twitter Framerate | YT Framerate |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 0:16 | 25 | n.a. |
2 | 0:30 | 25 | n.a. |
3 | 0:30 | n.a | 25 |
4 | 0:26 | 29,970 | n.a. |
Why is only the last video out of sync then?
If you tell me PAL->NTSC conversion I have some remarks:
- The standard in France was called SÉCAM and it was based on the 50Hz European main frequency, basically it ended up having the same 25fps PAL framerate. The pitch increase happens only when converting from PAL to NTSC, on the reverse you have a pitch decrease.
- The PAL/NTSC conversion is not a thing anymore, everythinng is digital, the little computer inside your TV or smartphone takes very signal and just doesn’t care if it’s 24, 25, 23.976, 30 fps or whatever.
For now it’s a mistery if it’s even a network mess-up or just some error from the social marketing crew, the only solution is to check the actual TV airing somehow.
